Meanwhile, the rest of the natives surround them, and the castaways flee through the island trying to hide from them before taking refuge in a cave. The scout they captured meanwhile escapes and describes them back to the other natives. The Professor has by now realized the natives may be cannibals and that their primitive beliefs may be the way to scare them off the island. He may be able to scare them with radio, a plan that works well until Gilligan drops it and breaks it. The Professor gets captured, so the Skipper tries the plan again with their flashlight, but Gilligan forgot to put the batteries in it. The problem with this process is that all thinking dissociating from rationality brings its immediate annihilation by progress and “over- progress” domination. Far from us to say that modernity needs to be forbidden but maybe it would be time to call into question some of these concepts. Yet, there are other ways to apprehend this world of ours, like myths and believes. These irrational stories often reveal important moral, ecologic or spiritual values. The works of Perrault abound with community stories to refer to and we have chosen two pictures that are obvious examples. This same opposition allows the movie director to create a critical thinking about this modernity (in brief, a postmodernist thinking). Over one hundred articles in publications ranging from Life, the Village Voice, Vogue, Art Forum and the Wall Street Journal to Cahiers du Cinema and Parachute) have focused on her work. I can't think of another person who works with a camera, male or female, young or old, who has received this kind of attention. Cindy Sherman photographs herself or has other people photograph her in different scenarios which she concocts and in which she is the sole performer. She puts on wigs, uses elaborate make- up, wears costumes. She transforms herself into a variety of women under 3. In many of the images Sherman looks like the sullen, artificially glamorous women in advertisements for Vidal Sassoon remoisturing creme and Victoria's Secret lingerie. There is practically no humor in any of the images, no campy, vampy strutting. Sherman is not having fun putting on her wigs, dressing in clothes not her own, and becoming a different person. She isn't Margaret Mead, Madonna, Susan Sontag, a member of the Junior League, or a raving beauty. But it is hard not to respond to the theater of the images and to Sherman's performance or to wonder how she made herself up to look like such different women from image to image. The pictures in their original gallery presentation are 8. Except for one image, . My favorites are #5. Sherman peers at herself in the mirror, #4. Sherman waiting by the side of the road as if for a ride, valise beside her, #4. They look like what any indiscriminately chosen frame would present if you put your VCR on pause. Each image is unextraordinary and the plainness must be part of Sherman's point, as if to demonstrate that all instants are equal and equally mundane. The performances have a definite artificiality; though all the elements of the images are real, you would not mistake Sherman for a real woman walking down a real street. You know you are looking at some kind of stage set, some kind of contrived situation. These images are all in an enclosed unidentifiable space and Sherman has directed the camera so that her performance, not the environment, monopolizes the image. By bringing the camera in close to her, she creates a feeling of nearness, but not of closeness or intimacy. Quite the opposite, most of the women Sherman portrays seem untouchable. In #9. 3, Sherman is hiding as if wounded under brown tousled sheets. In #8. 7, she is lying blankly on a wooden painted floor holding a red and orange blanket. In #1. 03, she is standing, hurt and seductive. In #9. 9, she is clearly furious, covering herself with a bright red towel. Only in the last six images, #1. Vermont Maid maple syrup), #1. Sherman portray a woman who is at all upbeat. These are, I think, her most successful color images. The rest of the women are fragile mannequins, some playing at being seductive, some playing at being wounded psychically. This freeze- frame effect makes her images recall sports photos - her emoting has the same arrested, frozen aspect and compressed sense of space that the athlete's grimace has when it's caught by a telephoto lens and a motor drive. In fact, Sherman may have achieved this effect by using a motor drive camera which takes exposures at a very rapid rate and which can catch movement and expressions not normally discerned by the eye. Or else she may be a consummate actress who can hold an expression for a long time. Most of the poses and expressions that she assumes in her performances seem familiar to us because they look the way women look in film and video (and in pornography magazines, which are very cinematic). We rarely see in real life many of the expressions Sherman portrays because the eye simply doesn't allow it. Some photographers have extended the autobiographical form to include images of themselves acting out their fantasies or horrors. In these circumstances the work is rooted in the photographer's life and the facts of the life, actual or imagined. There is an attempt at self- exploration, self- definition, and self- revelation. Too, the photographic self- portrait traditionally has involved only the photographer and her camera. The shutter is released by the photographer herself with a cable release or by a self- timer on the camera. Sherman's work is closer to the tradition within photography of dressing up and assuming roles for the camera to immortalize than it is close to the tradition of self- portraiture. From the very beginning, photographers have fooled around with costumes, photographing the transformation of people as they assume different roles with disguises, props, and make up. In the 1. 86. 0s Julia Margaret Cameron, the most widely known Victorian portraitist, had people dress up to dramatize allegories. Lewis Carroll dressed Agnes Grace Weld as . Golden transformed herself into movie stars in movie glossies' head shots and titled her images, . In the early eighties, William Wegman dressed up his dog Man Ray and photographed him in many guises. And in a series being created right now, East Coast photographers Suzanne Winterberger and Martha Friend have transformed themselves into two women, Aunt Mimi and Cousin Marion, whom they follow through many adventures in an extensive series of postcards. The ultimate documentation of performance is Eleanor Antin's journal of her encounters and experiences during three weeks in October 1. More likely, she is the model and the director and the image is her concept. But the selection of the precise 1/3. But who does click the shutter? Is it always the same collaborator, or does Sherman work some of the time with a variety of people and some of the time alone? In most of the images she looks like an actress or model whose performance is appreciated by at least an audience of one. Alone with a camera on a tripod, using a cable release or a self- timer, there would surely be a different nuance in the glance, the cast of the eyes. I can't imagine anyone, who likes women really liking these images: the women in Sherman's performances are for the most part unattractive types who reinforce the view of women as manipulative, needy, vulnerable, pouty. They are just a repetition of the usual stereotypes. Nor do her performances comment on the many roles women are forced to assume, nor guide us toward a better understanding of female identity. None of the untitled women is obviously a daughter, mother, worker, caregiver, organizer. Sherman's performance, particularly in the color work, is basically one- dimensional. It makes us intellectualize about the pictures and read them as signs rather than as documents of women we should empathize with. In fact, it seems that these are images made to be thought about and talked about and written about rather than images that were made to be looked at. There is not enough in them for them to be a feast for the eyes. In fact, she goes out of her way to obliterate signs of herself and creates in her performances and her images women who reveal no sense of self, women who seem objectified and stereotypical. Sherman in each image uses herself as an object, like a chair or a room that is constantly reworked by aspiring decorators. In each image of her performances, she creates a still life - in which the major element is a distressed woman instead of the usual bowl of fruit or white porcelain water jog. To begin with, there is the fact that she does not consider herself a photographer or her work photography. Secondly, she does not always take the photograph herself. Then there is the heroic scale of the larger pieces, 6 1/2 by 4 feet - more reminiscent of wall art than of art photography. Also, by purposely making her pictures visually uninteresting, she is telling us that the fact of her photographic documentation is more important than what is in the image. By calling each of her images . The same lack of detail restrains the viewer's memory and limits the nostalgia that the viewer typically brings to photography. Looking at the images of Cindy Sherman, one has to wonder if its author's phenomenal success has to do with the misogynistic objectification of women that this documentation embodies. While the series has stumbled every so often, it usually bounces back with something fresh and inventive. And even the films that stumble (2, 5, 6) have their cult followings and hardcore fans (myself included). Admittedly, though, even some of the good films have their weaknesses, along with their strengths. The first Nightmare is utterly terrifying – one of the single most frightening films ever made. The imagery and ideas behind that film are downright legendary, and Robert Englund's performance is easily one of the creepiest ever committed to celluloid. But the film is also a bit flat and melodramatic when it comes to some of the adult performances, especially Nancy's overbearing soap opera mother. That's not to say her performance ruins the film, but it does add some camp from time- to- time. Nightmare 2: Freddy's Revenge gets a bad rap, but it's also the last of the “scary Freddy” films until Wes Craven's New Nightmare. It also plays around with gender, adding a wonderfully amusing dash of homo- eroticism (look out for the phallic symbols and other blatant cues). The film also plays around with Freddy in the real world, and boasts some of the best makeup of the entire series. While the film does feel a little off at times, it's got a lot going for it. Nightmare 3: Dream Warriors is easily the best of the traditional Freddy sequels. A Nightmare on Elm Street was met with rave critical. She defeats Freddy.' Langenkamp agrees: 'Nightmare is a feminist movie. One, two, Freddy's coming for you. Wes Craven, a filmmaker who seems to live for reinventing horror in every decade he's worked in, made magic in the mid-80s when he gave life to horror maniac Freddy Krueger. Nightmare on Elm Street Collection, The (Blu-ray). The Nightmare on Elm Street Collection without question has its ups and downs. I'm a big fan of Freddy as you can tell by my user name springwoodelmst, feel free to comment below and share your freddy collection.I always like meeting fans of the series. Thanks for checking out my video. It helps establish the universe that Freddy stalks while adding a surprisingly potent backstory. The visual effects, notably the Freddy snake and the stop- motion sequences, are absolutely top notch. That said, the film focuses more on the grim, morbid visual effects and isn't always as scary. Still, for fans seeking the quintessential Nightmare sequel, this is it. The fourth Nightmare, The Dream Master, is the funniest of the series, swapping scares for glossy visual effects and a severely jokey tone. This was the height of the Nightmare craze, and while the film attempts to push some boundaries, it also feels a bit like a parody on some levels. Thankfully, the story does manage to balance character with plot, and it never really feels like the story introduces characters just to kill them off. However, coming off such a perfect Nightmare film, it's a slight disappointment. Nightmare 5: The Dream Child attempts to restore the film to its more horrifying roots, but damning cuts to the violence and effects hurt the overall product (annoyingly, the unrated cut is STILL not available, not even on this Blu- ray). This is also the one Nightmare picture where the characters really do feel disposable. We no longer root for them – we root for Freddy to kill them. Freddy's makeup, production design and the film's slick music video- inspired cinematography add some pizzazz, but the story is starting to run on empty and it shows. Nightmare 6, or Freddy's Dead, toys with a quirky David Lynch tone, which works well with the comedic nature of Freddy. He's also a bit more cruel with his gags in this film. Sadly, there's no story left other than a hitherto unmentioned daughter for Freddy to contend with. New Line pulled this same trick with Friday the 1. Jason Vorhees. Not every franchise is meant to be Halloween, folks. However, Lisa Zane does a fine job with the material, and the added backstory breathes a tiny shred of life into the franchise. Unfortunately, the film is never particularly scary, and the 3. D finale is just appallingly awful (the 3. D scenes are not included in this Blu- ray release). Wes Craven's New Nightmare throws out the canon for a new, refreshing narrative approach, and achieves some solid scares along the way. Serving as a sort of prototype for Craven's horror classic Scream, the film toys with meta humor while re- establishing Freddy as a more conniving, sinister demon – something for audiences to genuinely fear. Over the years, though, New Nightmare has lost a bit of its touch. The pacing is off and the film goes on for way too long (it's the longest film in the series by more than 1. Warner Bros. This box set was previously available overseas, so if you have that set, there's no need to update. The film's themselves have been remastered in 1. DTS- HD Master Audio for the first film and 5. DTS- HD Master Audio for the sequels. Extras have been ported over from previous releases, including the material found on the old Nightmare box set, and the newer special edition release. The fifth disc – a DVD – includes a slew of new bonus content, but more on that in a bit. The films themselves look merely OK. Admittedly, none of the Nightmare films were particularly expensive endeavors and usually featured cheaper film stock. As such, the film's tend to favor a softer, smoky palette, shallow depth and smooth textures and details. This doesn't always translate well to Blu- ray. The image only ends up looking a shade or two sharper than the DVD counterparts. That said, having watched these films on DVD dozens of times over the years, there is a noticeable upgrade in terms of visual clarity and quality, and hardcore fans with a strong affection for this series should appreciate the new HD presentation, even if it's far from perfect. Like the transfers, audio isn't always that impressive, though each mix never betrays the atmosphere of the film. But each film is a product of its time, and that's quite evident here. Mixing tends to be a little flat, with noticeable crackles, some wonky surround separation and grimy bass. Still, considering the age of each film, the 5. DVD releases. The first Nightmare is presented on a standalone Blu- ray. Every extra found on the original DVD release and the special edition DVD have been ported over. You get two terrific commentary tracks, a trivia track, a slew of featurettes, alternate footage, outtakes and more. Oddly, some deleted footage that exists out there in Internet land (found on an old Laserdisc release and in the three videos above) are still missing. The subsequent Nightmare films are paired up on the remaining three Blu- ray discs. Extras here are ported from the bonus DVD found on the old Nightmare box set. Weirdly, the set is missing the 3. D finale from Freddy's Dead. It's not big loss, since it kinda sorta sucks, but with Blu- ray 3. D, it would have been neat to see it presented properly. Also, despite an uncut VHS release, Nightmare 5 is still presented in its heavily edited R- rated form. This would have been the perfect opportunity to deliver the longer version, or at least the scenes from that version. Alas, those scenes are nowhere on the disc (you can view some of the scenes in the two videos below). Disc five houses more than 3 hours of additional content, presented on DVD. There's a wonderfully in- depth 3. Fear Himself: The Life and Crimes of Freddy Krueger,” filled with cast and crew interviews and plenty of retrospective love and admiration for the franchise. Instead, fans get the solid episode, “Killer Instinct” and the mediocre episode “It's a Miserable Life.”Fans of A Nightmare on Elm Street should also check out the documentary “Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy.” The two- disc set includes one of the single- most exhaustive documentaries ever created. Running more than 4 hours, the documentary examines each and every film in the franchise. There's also a feature- length commentary track for the documentary with even more insight! The second disc includes another four hours of interviews. In other words, between this Blu- ray and that DVD of Never Sleep Again, there's little room for Nightmare fans to complain. If only that DVD release could have been included here, along with Freddy Vs. Jason, the complete TV series and the wretched remake. Regardless, what's here is more than impressive. Follow R. L.
